The Romanian Hillclimb Championship finally started this weekend with the Trofeul Serus, also known as the Rasnov Hillclimb. The competitors in Romania will face a formidable new rival this year as Bulgarian Champion Lyuben Kamenov is planning a full campaign. In Saturday practise Kamenov immediately set showed what he was capable with fastest time. The Bulgarian was also the only driver to tackle the 4 kilometre long track in under two minutes. But everything changed overnight as the rain came pouring down Sunday morning. By the time the races started it was dry again but the road remained tricky.
It was up to Lucian Radut keep the Romanian flag op top. Quite literally as his Mitsubishi Lancer is painted in the same Red-Yellow-Blue as the national flag. With a brilliant time in the first race he immediately had a 4,5 second lead. Kamenov beat that time in the second race but Radut went also a little faster to achieve a well desrved victory. Surprise of the weekend was Alexandru Mirea. With his new Audi A4 4WD Turbo he placed himself in third place in the first race. In the second race he lost a little time but only Paul Andronic was able to pass Mirea.
The battle in Group N was incredibly close this weekend. Alexandru Mitroi was fastest in race 1 but his lead over Calin Manitiu was just .016 seconds. In race 2 they were again very close but this time Manitiu was fastest by just .063 seconds! In contrast Ciprian Ciobotaru won Group A with a ‘massive’ lead of 3 seconds.
