The Basque Country Hillclimb Championship continued with the legendary Subida a Jaizkibel. A great entry of almost 90 drivers was present. Everybody got a massive scare in free practise when Monika Muñoz flipped her car over the barriers. The Citroën ZX pilot was transported to a hospital but had no serious injuries. After a long delay the rest of the event went by without big problems.
Aitor Zabaleta was once again the fastest driver. With his old and faithful Lola BMW sportscar Zabaleta won the event and the championship. Pantxo Egozkue had difficulties with the set-up of his Osella PA30 sportscar but still finished second. Third overall was for best touringcar driver José Antonio Lopez-Fombona. At the Jaizkibel he faced some serious opposition from Raul Borreguero with the well-known Mosler MT900R and Bruno Scherer in his Porsche 991 GT3. Scherer’s third place finish secured him the touringcar championship. In Formula Libre Joseph Duperou stepped out of the title fight because he has switched cars. His new machine is a BMW M3 E46 GTR for the GT division. He was still getting used to it at Jaizkibel and finished 19th overall.
