Ilirska Bistrica is a town in the southwest of Slovenia. It lies at the northern end of the Dinaric Alps, which is the mountain range that stretches throughout the former Yugoslav republics. The peak that dominates the area around Ilirska Bistrica is the Snežnik mountain (1796m). It frames a karst limestone plateau of 85 square kilometres whose impressive natural formations attract many tourists. From Ilirksa Bistrica the mountainplateau is some 25km to the east.
If you travel that same distance to the south instead, you end up near the Adriatic Sea and the Croatian portcity of Rijeka.
