Ascoli Piceno is a city in the Marche region in central Italy. It is enclosed by mountains on three sides, only unprotected in the east. That is where the river Tronto flows away from the city towards the Adriatic Sea, some 30km further. Ascoli Piceno lies at an altitude of about 150m above sea level. The hillclimb however does not start at the base of the mountains, but much higher up. More specifically it starts at the Colle San Marco at 694m and climbs to the Colle San Giacomo at an altitude of 1100m.
Almost melting with the mountain side of the Colle San Marco is the former monastery of San Marco. Although abandoned since the fifteenth century, it has not fallen to complete ruins. From the monastery one can still overlook the historic buildings of Ascoli Piceno. To name all the important monuments in the city would go too far. It is sufficient to say that Ascoli Piceno is considered to have one of the most beautiful citycentres of the country. And in Italy that means a lot!
