The Chanaz Hillclimb is not only used for cars. On a different weekend it is also a round of the French Hillclimb Championship for Motorcycles. The motorcycles do use a slightly shorter track as they start outside the village of Praille.
Chanaz is build on the banks of the Savières Canal. This small canal connects the Rhône with the Bourget Lake. Historically this canal was an important connection between France and Savoy. Today it is mainly used by tourists. Chanaz has a small port and it also has a waterlock. It is therefore a fixed stop for anybody passing through on a waterholiday. And many people pass through Chanaz as it is the only way to get their boat towards Aix-les-Bains.
Aix-les-Bains is the largest fresh water port in France. At the end of the nineteenth century the thermal baths became a magnet for tourists. The city build on that fame to grow beyond the average pleasure spa-town like you will find in so many other places. The lake can be used for watersport activities, the mountains are just a stonesthrow away and the artmuseums belong to the best in France.
Those who visit the lake should not forget to visit the Hautecombe Abbey. It is beautifully located on the western side of Lake Bourget.
