Neffiès is a tiny village with 900 inhabitants in the south of France. It lies some 30km from the Mediterranean coast in the departement of Hérault. The town is situated at the foot of Massif Central. The landscape here is still hilly with altitudes of around 200 to 300 metres.
Hérault is one of the largest wine producing departements of France. It is also one of the most visited tourist destinations of France, thanks to its seaside resorts. The closest to Neffiès are Sète and Cap d’Agde.
Those who wish to stay far away from the busy beaches will find some beautiful nature in the hills. Just north of Neffiès you will find a number of interesting geological formations. Some 20km north of the village is the Cirque du Mourèze. It consists of totally unique limestone rockformations. If you go still a little further north you will arrive at the Salagou Lake. This artificial lake lies on a soil of “ruffe”, a type of clay sediment mixed with iron oxide which has a distinct red color. It is a very old soil dating from the Perm some 280 million years old. Much later, until some 5 million years ago the area saw a lot of vulcanic activity. You can still spot the lavabombs and large basalt formations on the ruffe surface.
