In 1491 the Virgin Mary appeared to a blacksmith in the Alsace. She was holding three ears of wheat (Trois Épis) signalling a good harvest. To celebrate this occasion a large church was built, the latest version stands since 1968. This is near the finish of the Hillclimb.
The start of the Hillclimb lies near Turckheim, a town that still values agriculture. Although not in wheat but rather in wine. The town has kept much of its historic buildings, including the city gates. A curious tradition in Turckheim is that of the Nightwatchman. Every night at 22:00 a watchman patrols the streets dressed in traditional clothes and singing local songs.
Turckheim is only a few kilometres to the west of Colmar. The city of Colmar is the center of Alsace. Both literally but also from a tourist standpoint. The visitors are attracted by the wine and gastronomy of the city, but also the many old but well preserved monuments. Furthermore there are two important museums in the Colmar. The first is the Bartholdi Museum dedicated to the sculptor of the Statue of Liberty. The other is Museum Unterlinden which houses the world famous Issenheim Altar Piece.
Turckheim lies on the edge of the Nature Park Ballon des Vosges. This park encompasses most of the Higher Vosges Mountains. The blunt mountain peaks can reach up to 1343m. Many people enjoy the mountains by traveling the Route des Crêtes. This is an old millitary road over the peaks. The area is largely deforested which enables fantastic views into the valleys.
