Varna is the second largest city in Bulgaria. It is located on the Black Sea coast in a large bay. The urban areas are seperated from the sea by almost 20km of sandy beaches. This immediately explains why Varna is the largest summer resort of Bulgaria. It has a humid subtropical climate, which differs from the Mediterranean climate in that there is more rainfall during the summer. The breezewinds can make summerdays a lot cooler than in the mediterranean.
Varna is one of the most important archeological sites for the prehistory in the whole world. The results of the excavations can be seen in the city’s archeology museum. This includes the Varna Necropolis which is the oldest golden treasure found in the world.
Varna remained important throughout history. It became a Greek settlement around 1000 BC. and later the Romans took control. The city still holds the largest Roman ruins of Bulgaria.
After the independence of Bulgaria in 1878 Varna was completely rebuild in the western styles of the time. Not much architecture from the Ottoman and Byzantine eras remains. Since the 1990’s the city is booming again, this time developing into a typical seaside resort.
The Hillclimb is situated a bit north of the actual city of Varna. It is situated behind the Golden Sands, a relatively recently developed seaside resort. It is sometimes called mini-Vegas and it even has a mini replica Eifel Tower. There is a small national nature park closeby which is also home to the Aladzha Cave Monastery.
