Luigi Fagioli was an Italian racing driver. He was born in 1898 in Osimo in the Marche, but grew up in Gubbio. In the 1920’s he started motorracing and quickly showed his talents. He became a worksdriver for Maserati in 1930. At the time motorracing was a source for national pride. Especially the National Socialists in Germany took Grand Prix racing very serious. They gave huge subsidies to their two major autosport teams, Mercedes and Auto Union. It may come as no surprise that the Silver Arrows became the cars to beat in the remaining pre-war years. That Luigi Fagioli was chosen to be a driver for first Mercedes in 1934 and later Auto Union, is a testament to his huge talent. Among his victories are the Monaco Grand Prix, the Spanish Grand Prix, the German Grand Prix at AVUS and two Italian Grands Prix at Monza. After the war he made a comeback to racing. Already in his fifties when the World Championship started in 1950, he nevertheless acquired 5 podiums in 6 races, becoming 3rd overall in the final standings. In 1951 he drove only one championship Grand Prix, in France. Nevertheless he won that race, even though he had to share the car with Juan-Manuel Fangio. He is still the oldest driver to ever win a race in the World Championship. Luigi Fagioli died in 1952 in the aftermath of a crash in the support race of the Monaco Grand Prix. In 1966 the Trofeo Luigi Fagioli Hillclimb was started in his honour.
The start of the Hillclimb is just northeast of the town Gubbio in Umbria. It was an important Roman city, evidenced by the second largest Roman theatre still in existence. But even before that Gubbio was an important settlement. Already in 1444 a series of bronze tablets was discovered. These Iguvine Tablets were written in the Umbrian language and describe pre-Roman and early Roman religious practises. That makes them an unique archeological find.
Another important discovery was first made in the soils around Gubbio. Between the geological layers of the Cretaceous period and the Paleogene period, a small layer consisting of Iridium was found. This metal is very rare on earth but is more common in space, like in meteors. As the layer was also found on other places on earth, it gave rise to the idea that a large meteorite hit the earth some 65.5 million years ago. This event would have been responsible for the extincition of the Dinosaurus.
